CRAIG ENGER: Cool Waters

Cool Waters.
A spirited, acoustic album. Essentially a live album, the rhythm guitar, drums, bass, and vocals were recorded at once in a lively jam session. Only harmonies and lead guitar were added afterward. Recorded at Knuffknick Studios in the middle of winter, my fingers were freezing, but the music came out sounding warm and earthy. This is still a favorite. For best results, you should be driving on the road to the outdoors.

Cool Waters

When you need to get away for a while
meet us where the river runs
Our friends are gathered on the hillside there,
and we can walk out in the sun

You're looking for magic all around you
Looking near, looking far
Stay with me out in the starlight tonight
and we will know who we are
We will know who we are

It's like cool waters
Cool waters

Out in the middle of the meadow
Provincial dance in open air
A vintage draught to take with brimming joy
This silver ribbon's way is fair

So stroll the pathways out before us
in October gold, Adirondack blue
Laughter mixing with the falling brook
Sweet catharsis coming through

It's like cool waters
Cool waters

The Call (Open Sky Ahead)

I come from the mountains
and I’m missing that sweet country air.
I’ve been hiking around them,
tall and serene.
I want to take you there
Where the walls of the trembling city of sins all disappear
Where the mind unwinds and begins to feel fine,
Thoughts are more clear.

We go riding the horses around the lake in the Spring
Revealing the secret of a wearied soul’s reawakening.
There are no hindrances here,
no buildings to block the wind
as it whispers through the woodland
and welcomes me in.

Open sky ahead and sunset coming down.
Feel it in your loving heart and get into the sound.
Lust for life is calling, no mystery,
No walls separating you from me.

Awake with the morning’s
first glimpse of pure, golden light.
Walk with awareness
of life’s simple pleasure inside you.
Where the old road ends and the trail begins
follow the sound of the woods.
Learn to loosen up and do what makes you feel good.

Returning with open eyes
Where waters all run free
I can feel the spirit rising inside of me.
In this place of yearning we can learn to love again.
Nothing need confine us as together we can stand
Where the lust for life is greater and the worries a little less,
the heavy burdens lighter.
Greet the call to happiness.

Retracing Footsteps

In these few and precious moments
I never felt so fine
As in the company of strangers
Who became dear friends of mine.
I remember the rooms we filled with kindness,
exchanging our laughter and our songs.
It’s hard to accept it,
that you can’t hold on forever.
Life moves you on.

We took our steps with caution,
rationed our compassion,
in a group of friends.
But now I miss that touch
that gives you comfort where
you didn’t think you find it.
Lord knows we shared so much.

Now I’d like to greet them,
If their footsteps I could trace.
My stride has led me here,
But we’ll meet again someplace.

I remember the rooms we filled with kindness,
Exchanging our laughter and our songs.
It’s hard to accept it,
That you can’t hold on forever.
Life moves you on.

California Calls (Song For The Two of You)

California calls.
Her snapshot falls from the wall
They don’t know what to say to each other
And he’s afraid of losing her
Chicago is old and cold
And more and more he hears the sound
Of a lonely song
I wonder if he’s going to hang up or hang on

California calls.
He wants everything or nothing at all
Neither one’s getting through
Times have changed, and they have, too.

Here’s a song for the two of you to pull through.
Our lives are what we choose to make them.

She calls him then he calls me then I call her
And begin to see they’re both right
They both mean well
One way or the other it’s hard to tell.
On the other end of the line
She’s listening to a voice she wants to recognize again
But it’s coming from so far
Their love was right when they didn’t have to try so hard.
That’s so true.

Here’s a song for the two of you to pull through.
Our lives are what we choose to make them.

Calling California.
There is dissonance in their voices
They don’t what to say
Times have changed and so have they.
The color of their eyes have turned another hue
And what they see now is not what they knew
From here to there started small and just grew.

Here’s a song for the two of you to pull through.
Our lives are what we choose to make them.

Resonance

Once, some time ago
the peak was in the clouds
Obstacles evaporate
you see so clearly now

Archways echo sound
within your temple halls
South the courtyards where you came from
North the future calls

A sense of one half luck
and one half destiny
Concentrated force is moving
mass to energy
Resonance against the balance,
overcome the weight
What before was beyond hope
is turning into fate

Sympathetic sound vibration
waves through matter flows
Capture subtle curvatures
in oil, bronze, and gold

Expanding ever outward
No, you cannot rest
This distance of a thousand miles
is made of single steps

A sense of one half luck
and one half destiny
Concentrated force is moving
mass to energy
Resonance against the balance,
overcome the weight
What before was beyond hope
is turning into fate

Moving Forward

I have never been one to take life easily
No, I have too much on my mind and in my heart
My emotions run away with me
And with them I cannot part

But as I face this cold adversity
I know I can still be strong
Since she left this earth it’s plain to see
You cry awhile, then carry on.

Things are moving forward,
Think I’ll take some time
Time to take this in
Try to clear the lines
See if where I’m going
Is where I want to go
Reevaluate what I
want to have to show.
Things are moving forward
Think I’ll take some time
Time to think this through
See all that’s good in life.

I could juggle swords and fire
I could struggle all I want
But if I don’t first know where I’m headed,
I won’t find what I have sought.

It’s too easy to get tangled,
and lose track of what I dream.
And it’s often difficult to balance
what I want and what I need.
